POCUS

Training in Bedside Procedures and Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS):

Residents have access to state-of-the art ultrasound equipment at each campus. Formal curricula for POCUS training includes integrated didactic sessions, hands-on training opportunities, and our POCUS elective for second and third year residents. Residents at Montefiore also learn and use POCUS in the emergency room, intensive care units, and in the Hospital Medicine and Health Systems Pathway. Interns achieve competency in common procedures such as ABG and ultrasound-guided IV placement and most residents complete the number of lumbar punctures and paracenteses required to perform these procedures independently. A brief but highly regarded simulation-based curriculum for lumbar puncture is required for all second-year residents. For residents interested in further honing of their bedside procedural skills, ample opportunity exists for supervised training in advanced procedures, such as central venous catheters and thoracentesis.

What to Expect:

The POCUS Elective is designed for highly motivated 2nd and 3rd year residents who want to achieve competency in the 3 main areas of bedside ultrasound: Image Acquisition, Image Interpretation, and Clinical Integration. The elective is offered twice per year for residents who are ideally not on Jeopardy. Prior experience with point-of-care ultrasound is a must. The curriculum includes didactics, mentored hands-on scanning, image review, as well as novel elements such as learning in the echo and vascular labs. Attendance is mandatory.
